Residential Inpatient Program

Maui Recovery is a transformational residential program, which specializes in healing individuals by addressing the core causes of addiction and compulsive behaviors. The result is both physical and emotional recovery with a renewed enthusiasm for life. When an individual comes into our program for treatment, they will undergo an intensive program that thoroughly and aggressively treats the addiction(s) they suffer from and at the same time, target and address the root underlying causes.

Maui Recovery is situated on a beautiful serene 1 acre property in Maui, just 750ft from the ocean.  Our facility fosters a sense of retreat and serenity, allowing our guests to induce deep healing. Our program ranges from 30 days to 6 months or more, depending on the individual needs of the client.  Our set admission dates occur every week and can only accommodate a limited number of 12 clients at a time. This allows us to provide an intimate environment where all participants feel comfortable and secure. Our staff ratio of (up to) 3 clients per therapist allows for individualized one-on-one attention when needed, yet the group experience elicits the necessary support and safety to allow for the healing process to occur.  All of our therapy is held offsite at Outpatient Center in Wailea, just down the road.

At  Maui Recovery we utilize a mix of process & experiential therapy modalities to assist clients in reaching those deeply rooted wounds. Our specialized methods include CBT, Neurofeedback, Equine Assisted Therapy, Adventure Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Meditation, Expressive Arts Therapy, Self-Love Work, Somatic Body Movement, Yoga and more. The Maui Recovery staff is dedicated and highly trained, with expertise in a wide range of specialties, such as trauma care, addiction, codependency, and recovery. Many of our amazing team of admissions staff, clinical staff, and aftercare/outreach staff combine to share decades of personal recovery experience. Meet our staff.

Our program is ideal for those individuals who are merely surviving in their own lives or stuck with an addiction they cannot break, and would like to live with more freedom, wholeness, and purpose in their lives. Those who attend Maui Recovery report a renewed freedom and vitality for life, and an overall new emotional recovery.

Our goal is to provide a full spectrum of care to secure a strong foundation for recovery.

Extended Aftercare Program

Relapse Prevention

While an individual is still in our residential or outpatient treatment program, he or she will receive extensive relapse prevention education. Maui Recovery Center offers several workshops to provide our residents with the tools that will support a smooth transition out of treatment, help them to identify and avoid the triggers that can lead to relapse, and empower them to respond to relapse in a healthy and productive manner without falling back into the destructive behavior patterns of ongoing substance abuse.

Life Planning/ Case Management/ Counseling

The day an individual begins their stay in our Extended Aftercare Program at Maui Recovery, members of his or her case management team begin to develop a personalized aftercare plan and walk with them during their stay to ensure they are making progress and growing in their recovery. This plan will document the individual’s progress while in our care, identify any issues of concern, and clearly define the specific steps that will guide him or her along the path of their recovery. Among the elements that may be included in a residents plan are professional referrals, community-based resources, outpatient programs, counseling opportunities, and 12-step support group meetings in the area. While in our extended care, we will fully come alongside you and set you up with our strong recovery community, Alumni, sponsors, counselors, and job opportunities that our alumni hold in the community. We also offer an incredible amount of support within our community, with access to our Doctor, Therapists, Counselors,  Adventure Therapy trips, our outpatient program, case managers, and community events we have twice a week on our property. Our clients have raved about the level of care, attention and support they receive while in our care. We go the extra mile for every individual who finds their way into our program, and that reflects our values of who we are as a leadership organization.

A Typical Day at Maui Recovery

Imagine waking up to the sunlight on the beautiful Island of Maui and shortly after taking some time for morning meditation to quiet the mind and set the tone for a healing day. A typical day at Maui Recovery is nurturing yet balanced with inner work. While a large part of your day will be spent engaging in focused and effective recovery program that is custom designed for you, you will also have the opportunity to experience one of Maui’s greatest healing assets, the beautiful outdoors. Mornings include a bit of movement to get the blood flowing. Activities include yoga, gym, walks, and other physical exercise. Studies have consistently demonstrated that exercise and sunlight contribute to increased feelings of well-being and decreased depression. We also go to morning meetings where there is a strong recovery community filled with the sunlight of the spirit, great fellowship and a strong message.

During the middle part of your day you have the options of a recovery program that rotates on a regular basis. From Equine therapy, to Neurofeedback, EMDR, Group work, Individual counseling, case management, Gym time, Yoga, Surf Therapy, Hikes, etc. You will receive open classroom-style education along with groups that will facilitate recovery from alcohol and other drug issues, along with processed groups that focus on deep emotional healing. Since some concerns may be better suited to individual therapy, the therapists there will spend time with you one-on-one, working to customize your treatment. If there is a need for additional individual therapy, your primary case manager will assist you in reaching these goals. You will also have the opportunity to engage in in-house or community 12-step recovery meetings on a daily basis to further deepen your spiritual growth as well as adventure therapy.

In the evenings, our community gathers for a healthy community meal, which our members often see as a highlight of the day. Since it is common in active addiction for nutrition to be ignored, we emphasize healthy, nutritious, community-based meals. Our family meal approach helps develop sound eating habits along with that ever so important connection to your new supportive recovery Ohana (family). The evenings close with time to journal, play a board game, relax, self care, or work on any assignments either personally developed or suggested by the recovery team.

Weekends are spent exploring the great outdoors, where our adventure leaders and guides will take you to experience the most exhilarating and breathtaking scenic trips the island has to offer. And these aren’t just  your every day adventures, it’s true therapy of the nature. Our healers and guides will take you on an inward journey and help you process and breakthrough unconscious fears, shame and insecurities to experience an awakening that creates a deeper sense of passion, self esteem, confidence and a renewed sense for living your life.

Below is an example of a typical day at Maui Recovery.

Person Centered Medical Home (PCMH)

Maui Recovery realizes that true recovery from addiction includes treatment of physical health issues and screening for chronic medical ailments.  As part of our program you will be assessed by either your personal physician, or one of our partner, physicians in order to identify any medical concerns that may need to be addressed. If any medical problems are identified, we will work closely with you and your physician to assure you adhere to recommended medical protocols.  Additionally, we subscribe to the model of patient-centered medical care.  In order to facilitate this we will work with you to identify and coordinate with your physician all aspects of care.  This model is frequently referred to as the Person Centered Medical Home (PCMH).

The PCMH provides primary health care that is relationship-based with an orientation toward the whole person. Partnering with patients and their families emphasizes understanding and respecting each patient’s unique needs, culture, values, and preferences. The medical home practice actively supports patients in learning to manage and organize their own care in order to continue to make and sustain health gains. Recognizing that patients and families are core members of the care team, medical home practices ensure that they are fully informed partners in establishing care plans.

We want to guide your healthcare goals and decisions, assisting you in making the best choices possible both in treatment and upon your discharge.

Mindfulness

What is Mindfulness? Being mindful means paying attention to the present moment with compassion, a lack of judgment and complete acceptance of the moment exactly as it is. Practicing mindfulness is a gradual process of mind-body-spirit consciousness.  The term mindfulness is derived from the pali-term satl which is an essential element of Buddhist practice and has been popularized in the United States by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD. Key concepts include being an observer of thoughts, feelings, and sensations rather than being consumed by them. Why Mindfulness? One of the first steps in dealing with addiction is to discover some of its emotional origins, which is a key part of our program in getting to the deep, buried, mostly painful emotions that we have been frozen from for a long time. The benefits of regular mindfulness practice have been proven scientifically to reduce stress, improve memory, reduce anxiety and depression, increase emotional regulation, relax the nervous system and increase empathy. Recent research has found that only 8 weeks of mindful meditation for approximately 30 minutes a day was found to create structural changes to the brain affecting mood, attention, memory, etc. A mindfulness practice includes meditation and body connection through practices such as yoga but is ultimately a way of life–being aware moment-by-moment of one’s very essence. Mindfulness practice helps us develop the capacity to see clearly what we’re attached to so that we can let go of it and end our suffering. You or your loved one will practice and develop mindfulness every day here at Maui Recovery through our daily meditations, building the practice of going within.
