Life Planning/ Case Management/ Counseling
The day an individual begins their stay in our Extended Aftercare Program at Maui Recovery, members of his or her case management team begin to develop a personalized aftercare plan and walk with them during their stay to ensure they are making progress and growing in their recovery. This plan will document the individual’s progress while in our care, identify any issues of concern, and clearly define the specific steps that will guide him or her along the path of their recovery. Among the elements that may be included in a residents plan are professional referrals, community-based resources, outpatient programs, counseling opportunities, and 12-step support group meetings in the area. While in our extended care, we will fully come alongside you and set you up with our strong recovery community, Alumni, sponsors, counselors, and job opportunities that our alumni hold in the community. A Typical Day at Maui Recovery
Imagine waking up to the sunlight on the beautiful Island of Maui and shortly after taking some time for morning meditation to quiet the mind and set the tone for a healing day. A typical day at Maui Recovery is nurturing yet balanced with inner work. While a large part of your day will be spent engaging in focused and effective recovery program that is custom designed for you, you will also have the opportunity to experience one of Maui’s greatest healing assets, the beautiful outdoors. Mornings include a bit of movement to get the blood flowing. Activities include yoga, gym, walks, and other physical exercise. Studies have consistently demonstrated that exercise and sunlight contribute to increased feelings of well-being and decreased depression. We also go to morning meetings where there is a strong recovery community filled with the sunlight of the spirit, great fellowship and a strong message.
During the middle part of your day you have the options of a wellness recovery program that rotates on a regular basis. From Equine therapy, to Neurofeedback, Group work, case management, Gym time, Yoga, Surf Therapy, Hikes, etc. You will receive open classroom-style education along with groups that will facilitate recovery from alcohol and other drug issues, along with processed groups that focus on deep emotional healing. If there is a need for additional individual therapy, your primary case manager will assist you in reaching these goals and getting you set up with resources on island. You will also have the opportunity to engage in in-house or community 12-step recovery meetings on a daily basis to further deepen your spiritual growth as well as adventure therapy.
In the evenings, our community gathers for a healthy community meal, which our members often see as a highlight of the day. Since it is common in active addiction for nutrition to be ignored, we emphasize healthy, nutritious, community-based meals. Our family meal approach helps develop sound eating habits along with that ever so important connection to your new supportive recovery Ohana (family). The evenings close with time to journal, play a board game, relax, self care, or work on any assignments either personally developed or suggested by the recovery team.
Weekends are spent exploring the great outdoors, where our adventure leaders and guides will take you to experience the most exhilarating and breathtaking scenic trips the island has to offer. And these aren’t just your every day adventures, it’s true therapy of the nature. Our healers and guides will take you on an inward journey and help you process and breakthrough unconscious fears, shame and insecurities to experience an awakening that creates a deeper sense of passion, self esteem, confidence and a renewed sense for living your life.
Below is an example of a typical day at Maui Recovery.
At Maui Recovery, we spend time outdoors reconnecting with nature and its healing properties.
The following activities are some of the other options we offer on your inward journey at Maui Recovery:
Workouts with Physical Trainer
Stand Up Paddle Boarding
Whale Watching (in season)
Field trips to local places of beauty and cultural interest
What is Mindfulness? Being mindful means paying attention to the present moment with compassion, a lack of judgment and complete acceptance of the moment exactly as it is. Practicing mindfulness is a gradual process of mind-body-spirit consciousness. The term mindfulness is derived from the pali-term satl which is an essential element of Buddhist practice and has been popularized in the United States by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD. Key concepts include being an observer of thoughts, feelings, and sensations rather than being consumed by them. Why Mindfulness? One of the first steps in dealing with addiction is to discover some of its emotional origins, which is a key part of our program in getting to the deep, buried, mostly painful emotions that we have been frozen from for a long time. The benefits of regular mindfulness practice have been proven scientifically to reduce stress, improve memory, reduce anxiety and depression, increase emotional regulation, relax the nervous system and increase empathy. Recent research has found that only 8 weeks of mindful meditation for approximately 30 minutes a day was found to create structural changes to the brain affecting mood, attention, memory, etc. A mindfulness practice includes meditation and body connection through practices such as yoga but is ultimately a way of life–being aware moment-by-moment of one’s very essence. Mindfulness practice helps us develop the capacity to see clearly what we’re attached to so that we can let go of it and end our suffering. You or your loved one will practice and develop mindfulness every day here at Maui Recovery through our daily meditations, building the practice of going within.
Sober Living in Hawaii
At Maui Recovery, we offer Transition Sober Living. With completion of 30, 60 or 90 day addiction treatment, we offer sober living for individuals needing more structure, care and guidance in their program.
Residents continue to live in a recovery community, go to 12-Step meetings daily, and participate in a Peer Support Group and community group therapy for addiction once a week. A Maui Recovery staff member lives in the recovery community and is available to monitor and assist with any problems or questions residents may have. All residents are required to follow rules and guidelines designed for the Transitional Living Program, and each resident is required to work, be a volunteer, or go to school for at least 20 hours each week as part of transitional living at MRC.
The transitional living community is a place to practice using the tools of addiction recovery, practice self care and focus on applying the 12-Steps to solve every day problems while living with other recovering individuals. Learning to be become vulnerable and honest is the foundation of lasting recovery, and a safe environment is the way for this to unfold. When combined with openness to direction and experience of others, and the willingness to follow suggestions, a strong foundation for individual recovery and a stronger community is developed.
Maui Recovery’s Transitional Living program is another step in the addiction treatment recovery process that helps to provide every opportunity for a healthy and happy recovery life, as one develops and grows into their healthier Self
