Equine Therapy

There are several different reasons to consider working with horses as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program

  • Learning Communication Skills

Horses may not be able to use words like us, but their ability to sense the feelings and intentions of those around them makes them great communicators. Years of untreated mental health issues and substance abuse can cause individuals to become emotionally distant and anxious during social situations. Equine Therapy benefits you by creating a better understanding of your communication patterns and how they can be improved. Horses also serve as a emotional mirror, if you approach them with fear, they will inevitably become frightened. On the other hand, greet them with confidence and love and they’ll be put at ease.

  • Facing Your Fears

Many people view horses as intimidating because of their size and strength. This reaction is completely normal for individuals and provides a powerful opportunity to overcome their feelings of self doubt and fear. Years of pain can leave individuals with a sense of helplessness and vulnerability, but equine therapy for anxiety offers the opportunity to reclaim their strength that was taken from you.

  • Restore Feelings of Self-Worth

Many people entering treatment live a lifestyle not conducive for their self-esteem and pride. The individual in recovery will likely struggle with feelings of worthlessness and shame. Equine therapy gives you the opportunity to remind yourself that you are worth it. By caring for and building trust with horses, our clients can reaffirm within themselves that they can have a positive influence on others.

  • Learning the Importance of Boundary Setting.

Horses are not shy when it comes to letting someone know when their personal boundaries have been crossed. If you approach a horse with aggression, they will communicate with you that your behavior is not acceptable. Also, if you’re too emotionally detached, communication with the horse will become a struggle. People in recovery may struggle to set healthily boundaries at first, but Equine Therapy allows our clients to practice this skillset. While there is no replacement for counseling, equine therapy can be a wonderful addiction to any comprehensive treatment center.
