Intensive Outpatient Program

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

While we at Maui Recovery do offer a residential program, we understand that addiction is far from a one-size-fits-all disease, and that a residential program may not be for everyone. Because of this, we have formulated a comprehensive IOP program for those who may not be able to commit to residential program because of personal obligations at home or at work. Our specific Intensive Outpatient program is offered by MRC at our new Wailea Town Center Location. This program is ideal for individuals who cannot commit to living in residential, have recently completed inpatient treatment and/or are looking for a step-down level of continuous care. Whether you are looking for continued recovery therapy on a part-time basis, or you are seeking an intensive yet flexible schedule that will accommodate your career and family life, IOP may be the right choice for you.  Read more about our outpatient program by clicking here.

Outpatient Program (OP) or Day Treatment

Our outpatient services are provided by our Clinical Team led by Jackie ‘Kapua’ Tyler, our clinical director.

The primary difference between our IOP program and our OP program is the number of weekly hours that clients participate in therapeutic group sessions. While Intensive Outpatient groups meet 15 hours week, outpatient groups meet less frequently and are a step-down from IOP. The flexibility of the outpatient schedule allows clients to work part-time if they wish, and is an ideal option for those who are looking for supplemental recovery support as they transition from an extended stay inpatient treatment center and to and from a sober living house. Many individuals utilize OP as the final stage of a step-down program as they prepare to transition back into completely independent living. Here are several reasons why an individual might opt to participate in OP versus IOP, PHP, or inpatient:

He or she cannot afford a higher level of care.
He or she has already completed an extended stay inpatient program, and is looking for some supplemental guidance in early recovery.
He or she must work part-time or full-time to support a family, but feels some level of treatment is necessary.

The substance abuse disorder is not severe enough to require detoxification, inpatient rehab, or partial hospitalization.
The client is enrolled in school full-time or part-time and is not able or willing to take a leave of absence.

The majority of therapeutic groups in our specific outpatient program focus on topics pertinent to the application of recovery in real life situations and circumstances. Essentially, the therapy available in our outpatient program is simply a condensed version of the therapeutic practices and techniques we employ in our more intense programs – with a heavier focus on relapse prevention and successfully coping with triggers and cravings.
One of the primary benefits of IOP is the ability of our clients to begin applying the vital life skills and coping mechanisms they learn into their daily lives while still actively participating in treatment. Our IOP program consists of approximately 9 hours of intensive therapeutic treatment each week spread over three days. Some of this therapeutic treatment will take place in a group setting, clients will also meet with an individual therapist once or twice a week for a one-on-one sessions and focused case management.

Some of the specialty forms of therapy available in our Residential and/or outpatient program Include:

Depending on the needs of each client, recommendation to attend additional mental health treatment, or offered individual counseling to meet your specific needs. When our census allows we offer gender groups, which focus on male and female-exclusive issues pertaining to addiction and recovery. For example, women tend to struggle more with body image and disordered eating patterns, while men tend to grapple with anger and aggression issues. We at Maui Recovery / Behavioral Health Hawaii also focus a great deal of attention on mindful living, utilizing a carefully developed program that strongly emphasizes emotional regulation. Many of our IOP groups are geared towards instilling in clients the tools and skills they need to develop healthy lifestyles and begin practicing adequate self-care. Overall, we aim to prepare our clients for success in the real world – while working to set a lasting foundation for lifelong and fulfilled sobriety.
